Transportation Improvement Program
The Transportation Improvement Program (TIP) specifies transportation improvements for the next five years. All projects receiving federal funds must be included in this plan. Other major projects which are part of the area’s program of improvements, but which do not receive federal funds, are included here as part of the planning process.
The current TIP covers the period from October 1st, 2015 through September 30th, 2020, and was approved by the TPO governing Board on May 21, 2015. Categories of improvements include Highway, Transit, Aviation, Seaport, and Non‐Motorized improvements with a combined cost in excess of $7.7 billion. All of the projects and priorities in this TIP are consistent with those in the adopted 2040 Long Range Transportation Plan.
The general goals of Miami-Dade County’s transportation plans are to enhance the mobility of the urban population, achieve a balanced transportation system, to meet energy conservation needs, to improve air quality, as well as to preserve or enhance the physical and social environment of the community.
TIP major activities included are:
- support facilities for Metrorail
- express bus service
- interstate highway projects
- congestion management
- non-motorized projects
- express transit on managed lanes
- arterial street improvements
- aviation and seaport facilities
- additional bus transit and paratransit improvements
- construction of major intermodal facilities
- deployment of Intelligent Transportation System applications.
Transportation System Management (TSM) projects are proposed to be continued or expanded. The Miami-Dade Secondary Road Program and Road Impact Fee Program contain projects that are supportive of the areawide TSM effort. These include:
- traffic flow improvements
- provisions for preferential treatments of high occupancy vehicles where appropriate
- improvements to intersection geometrics
- lighting safety projects
- and other related projects which provide for greater safety and better management of traffic flow
The projects in the FY 2016/2020 TIP have been grouped into major categories, with order of priority established within each category. Projects are listed in groups by funding source and implementing responsibility. The TIP also includes projects recommended for inclusion in future years or in the current program if new revenues become available in the section on Unfunded Needs.
The annual TIP may be amended at any time during the program year through the same procedures required for developing and adopting the original program. Proposed amendments may be for the purpose of deleting, adding, revising the funding, or modifying the scope or limits of a project.
The online version of our Transportation Improvement Program (TIP) can be found in the InteracTIP tool. The site includes the TIP Summary, Project Listings, and Citizen's Guide. Visitors can also search for individual transportation projects by name, category, type, and budget.
The site also includes the InteracTIP Map Tool that lets you search the TIP by geography. Click on roads and streets to get detailed information about planned projects for that location. The tool even allows you to switch between map, satellite, terrain, or a combination.
